The Groninger Museum is a museum in the city of Groningen and one of the top attractions of the province with a visitor number of approximately 200,000 visitors per year.

The first basis of the museum was the Museum of Germanic Antiquities, which was founded in 1847 by Hendrikus Octavius Feith in the University Library of Groningen.

At that time there were already several museums in Groningen, connected to the university, including the Museum of Natural History (ca. 1820) and the Collection for Mineralogy, Geology, Zoology and Zoology (1815), which are now part of the University Museum. After Feith's death in 1849, the Museum of Germanic Antiquities led a dormant existence until in 1874 the Provincial Cabinet of Antiquities was founded by his son Hendrik Octavius Feith (II), who merged his father's collection with two cabinets of curiosities of the city and province of Groningen. The collections were first housed in a room of the Provincial House, but when it became too small, son Johan Adriaan Feith found a building on the Zuidersingelstraat (now Ubbo Emmiusstraat) for the collections.

What started with a little bit in the backyard has now, 50 years later, grown into the largest seal hospital in Europe. With international fame and a broader objective that, in addition to professional shelter, focuses on the protection of the habitat of the seal: UNESCO World Heritage the Wadden Sea.
