Schildmeer

The Schildmeer (Shield lake) is a lake located in the Duurswold region in the Dutch province of Groningen between Schildwolde and Overschild.

The lake has an average depth of 1.5 meters and has an area of 284 hectares. It belongs to the municipality of Midden-Groningen. Most of the shores of the lake are nature reserves.

At Steendam there are facilities for recreation such as marinas and associated activities, a sandy beach, restaurants, campsites and a bungalow park. On the south side of the lake is the Haanssluis that connects the Haansvaart and the lake for smaller ships and flat bottoms. The south, west and northwest are part of the nature development area Midden-Groningen, which continues to Kolham.

Around the lake there are cycle paths that are part of the Schildmeer loop. For this purpose, a high wooden bicycle bridge Schildjer Tilbat was built in 2009 over the Duurswold drainage canal at the Sans Souci pumping station. On the south side of the lake runs the International Dollard Route. This route reaches the bank at the Heerenhuisweg and follows it to Steendam.

The Heerenhuisweg and pumping station Sans Souci are named after the mansion Sans Souci that Lodewijk Hendrik Wijchgel built in 1820 on the lake (at the end of the Heerenhuisweg) and that was demolished in 1952.

Appingedam

Appingedam is a city and former municipality in the municipality of Eemsdelta in the province of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands.

The town of Appingedam, located on the Damsterdiep, used to be the capital of Fivelingo. Together with the city of Groningen, it is one of the two places with historical city rights in the province. The center of the place is a protected cityscape with extension.

The cozy, narrow shopping streets and alleys invite you to discover Appingedam on foot. Many shops offer various goods and the catering industry with cozy terraces on the water provide a cozy city feeling.

During the summer period, Appingedam has the annual Damster City Festivals, which start in June with a fair and a music event, the Night of Appingedam. Some other city festivals are the (medieval) Coopluydenmarkt, the Art and Culture Day, The Beach Volleyball Tournament and the Gondola Ride. The city festivals end in September with the Damsterdag with two parades with floats, the so-called paper parade. Unlike the more famous flower parades, the wagons here are not decorated with flowers, but all parts are covered with thousands of colorful paper roses, made of crepe paper.

Through Appingedam runs the European walking route E9, locally also called Noordzeepad or Wad- en Wierdenpad.
